At Bluemont Sanctuary, every animal is home for life. That means never being adopted out, never being used, and never being alone. They find friends. They find family. They find peace.
And our promise to them?

Our Mission
Our mission is one of permanence; every rescue that walks through the barn gates stays for life.
Regardless of an animal’s age or medical conditions, the goal is to provide each one with a soft landing, which includes acres to roam, 24/7 free choice hay, individualized diets, consistent and ongoing supplementary and medical care.
Bluemont Sanctuary is home to several bonded pairs, as well as mothers and babies, who live their lives together in safety. The animals who call us home have stability and lifelong friendships.
Under this model, every animal gets to live as naturally as possible and will never be adopted out, ridden or used in any way.

Allister
We met Allister in 2022 at a massive neglect case we worked for months. He was standing off in the distance terrified of the humans that had arrived to help. He’s a big beautiful black Percheron draft with a soft eye and a heart of gold.

Pumba
Pumba is a literal angel baby. A saint of a goat with the sweetest and gentlest personality. He was bred to be a companion but needed cryptorchid surgery. His breeder didn’t have the funds for his surgery and contacted us to help. We got Pumba the surgical care that he needed, and now he lives his life in sanctuary.

Walter
Walter is a young miniature horse with dwarfism. We rescued him from a petting zoo that failed to properly care for him. It took us a little over a year to rehab Walter, but today he’s thriving.

It all started with one horse...
our story
Our first resident was a mare named Roxy, a beautiful 17.3 hand imported Hanoverian with a successful jumping career for many years. Unfortunately, she wasn’t offered a soft place to land for retirement. She was no longer “useful” in the horse community because chronic lameness and arthritis prevented her from being able to do a job. If Roxy’s impeccable breeding, world-class training, and amazing personality couldn’t secure her future in a private home, then what does that mean for the thousands of other horses that find themselves displaced every day?
Roxy sparked a passion, and our family felt compelled to step up and get involved on a deeper level.
Today, Bluemont Sanctuary is home to over 60 permanent residents, which include a growing family of horses, donkeys, ponies, barn cats, and goats—each one safe, loved, and exactly where they’re meant to be, in their forever home.
